Casey Deary’s Son is Finding His Stride

Wyatt Deary had a breakthrough moment at the 100X Reining Classic in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in September, where he earned over $53,000 in the open division riding five horses.

Deary and his colt Danger Zone swept Levels 3, 2, and 1 of the 100X 4-Year-Old Open Stakes Finals with a score of 223.5, securing a total of $38,743 for owner Jody Puno.

Despite his last name hinting at potential, Deary had to work hard for his success in Tulsa. He gave up his non-pro card and spent a year working for free, riding challenging horses in his father Casey Deary’s string.

Reflecting on his success in Tulsa, Deary mentioned that Danger Zone performed exceptionally well and showed significant mental growth during the event.

Danger Zone, sired by Americasnexttopgun (Maverick), a horse shown by Casey Deary to over $400,000 in earnings, required extra time for Deary to establish a strong partnership before their triumph in Tulsa.

From Golf Clubs Back to the Reiners

Deary transitioned from showing in the youth ranks to focusing on golf and eventually earning a scholarship to Texas Wesleyan University. However, his return to the reining world was sparked by watching his brother compete at the Run For A Million.

Disenchanted with college after a semester, Deary decided to pursue horse training full time under his father’s guidance, which involved a year of hard work and dedication.

“This time of year, I think it’s super easy for a young trainer who really wants to win to over-push their horses or hurt one, or not have enough horsepower when you get to the Futurity.
