What is reined cow horse?

Reined cow horse is a discipline that evaluates a horse’s ability to work with cattle and execute precise reining patterns. In the Open Futurity, horses compete in all three events – herd work, rein work, and cow work – with their scores combined to determine the overall champion.

  • Herd work: Involves cutting a cow from the herd and preventing it from returning, similar to a cutting run.
  • Rein work: Includes performing a designated reining pattern featuring circles, spins, lead changes, and sliding stops. The preliminary rounds use Pattern 8, while the finals use Pattern 11.
  • Cow work: Known as fence work, this event is a highlight. The horse must box a single cow, turn it along the fence, and then circle it in both directions in the middle of the arena.
The Snaffle Bit Futurity is exclusive to 3-year-olds, serving as a significant test for young cow horses and a platform to showcase leading trainers and bloodlines in the industry.
