When taking on the role of the lead horse on a trail ride, there are additional responsibilities to ensure the safety and enjoyment of the group. Here are some tips to be a good leader and practice lead-horse etiquette on the trail.

Don’t Assume Everyone is Game for a Fast Pace

It’s important not to make assumptions about the abilities of the other horses in the group. Before setting off, take the time to gauge the riders’ and horses’ readiness for different paces and obstacles. It’s crucial to consider the experience level of all members in the group and adjust your speed accordingly.

Have a Plan to Slow Down

When increasing speed, always have a plan in place to safely slow down or stop. Abrupt stops can lead to accidents and pile-ups among riders. Use clear signals to indicate changes in pace and ensure that these signals are relayed to the rest of the group.

Be Alert About Upcoming Obstacles

As the lead horse, it’s your responsibility to alert the group about any upcoming obstacles on the trail. Communicate effectively to ensure everyone is prepared for challenges such as water crossings, low branches, or hazardous terrain.

Check Behind You

Regularly check behind you to ensure that all members of the group are accounted for and maintaining a safe pace. Being aware of the group’s progress and adjusting your speed accordingly is essential for a successful and enjoyable ride.

Let Others Lead

Encourage other riders to take turns leading the group to provide a varied experience for everyone. Switching positions can help build confidence for both horse and rider and enhance the overall enjoyment of the ride.
