A horse in Josephine County, Oregon, has been diagnosed with equine rhinitis virus, as reported by the attending veterinarian. Another horse has also been exposed to the virus.

EDCC Health Watch is a program by Equine Network that uses information from the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) to produce and share verified equine disease reports. The EDCC is a nonprofit organization that relies on industry donations to offer accessible infectious disease information.

About Equine Rhinitis Viruses

Equine rhinitis viruses A and B (ERAV and ERBV) are responsible for respiratory illness in horses. Symptoms of ERAV and ERBV are similar to those caused by other respiratory viruses like equine influenza and equine herpesviruses.

ERAV and ERBV are typically spread through direct contact with infected horses, through airborne droplets when horses cough, sneeze, or snort, or via contaminated objects such as equipment, grooming tools, buckets, and water troughs.
