According to the Assistant State Veterinarian, a horse in Pierce County, Washington, has tested positive for equine influenza after being purchased at an auction. The horse is currently receiving veterinary care.

EDCC Health Watch, a program by Equine Network, utilizes information from the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) to create and share verified equine disease reports. The EDCC is a nonprofit organization supported by industry donations to provide accessible infectious disease information.

About Equine Influenza
Equine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease that affects horses, ponies, and other equids. The virus spreads through saliva and respiratory secretions, as well as through contact with contaminated surfaces. Common symptoms include fever, coughing, depression, weakness, and nasal discharge. Monitoring your horse’s health and vaccinating against equine influenza can help prevent the spread of the disease. Additionally, following biosecurity protocols can reduce the risk of infection in horses.
