Competing at the highest level of reined cow horse has taught me that the mental aspect can be just as challenging as the physical riding. Having the right horse, preparation, and opportunity is crucial, but if your mindset isn’t in the right place, you can easily hinder your own performance.

There are numerous variables in this sport, from dealing with cattle and different arenas to the pressure of every move counting. I learned early on that trying to control everything can be mentally draining. What truly matters is focusing on what you can control—your decisions, your horse’s position, and how you react in the moment.

This mindset was particularly important when I had a chance to win the 2026 World’s Greatest Horseman title. As I approached the possibility of victory, I found calmness by staying present and ensuring my horse was in the best possible position.

Here are some strategies that have helped me navigate the mental challenges of competing:

1. Focus on the Job, Not the Result

It’s tempting to fixate on winning, but this can divert your attention from the present moment. Instead of worrying about others or pushing your horse beyond its capabilities, concentrate on making the next right decision. Your primary goal should be showcasing your horse’s abilities and avoiding penalties. By doing so, you set yourself up for success. Comparing yourself to others or demanding too much from your horse can lead to setbacks.

2. Stay Calm When the Pressure Is On

When facing significant pressure, it’s crucial to remain composed and focus on what you can control in the show ring. Find techniques that help you stay calm, whether it’s regulating your breathing or mentally singing a familiar song. Remember, your horse can sense your emotions, so maintaining a calm demeanor is essential to a successful performance.

3. Trust Your Horse

Your horse is your partner, and it’s vital to trust its training and abilities. Through hours of practice at home, you’ll understand your horse’s capabilities and how to support it in the show ring while knowing when to let it work independently.

4. Control What You Can

You may not control external factors like cattle or the draw, but you can manage your preparation, decisions, and responses during the competition. Focus on what you can influence to perform at your best.

5. Let the Chips Fall Where They May

By concentrating on your performance and staying focused, the results will naturally follow. This mindset guides my approach every time I enter the show ring.
